Following the launch of update v0.8.54, we've significantly altered the fundamental gameplay mechanics of Knights of Cathena. This update introduces a range of strategic choices and depth for players to delve into. The team has carefully reviewed feedback from you, our community, and identified the top 10 key strategies for excelling in this updated version of the game. Without further ado, let's jump right into it!
#10 - Understand the new battlefield interface
Key to mastering the updated gameplay is understanding its per-unit turn basis. In each turn, only one unit can take action. The unit currently in play is displayed in the larger portrait at the lower-left corner of the new gameplay interface. This is the sole unit you can command and perform actions with. Given that the unit belongs to you, check the color to know for sure. The six portraits immediately to the right of this active unit show the sequence of upcoming units, providing insights into who will move next. You can even quick select any of those units by simple tapping/clicking on their respective portraits.
On the battlefield, there are up to 20 units (10 from your side and 10 from the opponent). These units are maneuvered based on the sequence set in the formation editor by you, the players. To ensure fairness, the match begins with alternating turns between players, allowing each player to act in succession, particularly at the match's start.
An important aspect to note: If player A (🟦) controls 10 units and player B (🟥) only 6, player A will experience consecutive turns towards the end of the sequence – a scenario best avoided!
To visualize, the resulting turn sequence will be as follows:

Notice how player A (🟦) gains an additional four consecutive turns at the end of the turn sequence which ultimately results into 5 consecutive attacks you'll need to defend if you are player B (🟥).
#9 - The more the merrier
Bringing more units into battle allows you to execute more actions and consequently, more attacks. Conversely, this reduces the number of consecutive actions and attacks from your opponent that you must defend against. Generally, it's advisable to avoid having fewer units than your opponent.
There could be scenarios where opting for a smaller number of units in your formation might be strategic, especially if you prefer to have one highly equipped unit over two or three lesser ones. However, keep in mind that even units equipped with the best gear will eventually fall if they are hit repeatedly. Our advice leans towards maintaining a balanced formation over relying on a few heavily equipped units.

#8 - Army or Commander?
Despite numerous changes, two victory conditions remain: kill the enemy commander or eliminate ones troops. It's crucial to assess your opponent's tactics and decide strategically which approach to pursue.
#7 - Positioning is key
Both offensive and defensive strategies hinge heavily on how your units are positioned. Adopting an aggressive stance puts pressure on your opponent, yet it's vital to avoid leaving gaps in your formation that could allow the opponent to target your commander.
Constant awareness is key to spotting flaws in your opponent's setup, allowing you to deploy your units more efficiently. Units such as the Mage thrive when the opponent's units are poorly positioned... same goes for your units.

👉 You commander needs protection simple because one cannot fight back. Never leave him unguarded.
#6 - Learn the unit types
Unit type differences are now more critical than before. The Knights of Cathena team advises opting for a balanced setup in this aspect too.
Understand the strengths and weaknesses:
👉 Knights deals extra damage to Archers
👉 Archers deals extra damage to Mages
👉 Mages deals extra damage to Knights
Grasping this concept is vital for anyone looking to improve their winning chances.
#5 - Break the turn order of your opponent
Executing strategic kills (or dodging them) can drastically alter the game. When a unit is defeated, it's removed from the turn sequence. This leads to a player gaining consecutive turns and thus attacks as specific units are taken out. By targeting the right units, you can generate a series of attacks that can pave the way to your victory.

👉 Aim for double or multiple attacks by eliminating opponent units
👉 Utilize the different attack patterns of your units
👉 Be strategic in your positioning before launching an attack
#4 - Unit loss is as impactful as scoring a kill
Maximize your units' damage potential by leveraging their unique attack patterns. The Mage, for instance, can turn the tide of the game if it can strike three targets simultaneously. You might be able to manipulate your opponent into a disadvantageous position, setting you up for a triple strike.
However, remember that your opponent has the potential to do the same.

#3 - Items: a curse and a blessing
Naturally, superior items enhance your units' capabilities. However, don't fixate solely on high-tier items. To avoid a Pay2Win scenario, it's possible to achieve victory using not just legendary (orange) but also uncommon (green) gear. The team once again emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach.
